Do you have the knack of simplifying complex ideas? Are you a nifty writer with an interest in the discoveries women are making in science? Want to help empower women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you should enter the…

Scientista DiscovHER Writing Competition

Entrants need to send an article of strictly no more than 1000 words, suitable for publication in the Scientista DiscovHER blog, which highlights the discoveries women are making in STEM.

Each submission must contain:
  • a catchy headline of no more than 10 words
  • at least one reference to a peer-reviewed article (about a study that has been conducted or led by a woman) forming the subject of the piece - make it a point to reach out to these women researchers and speak to them about their work!
It doesn't matter if you are male or female, the Scientista DiscovHER writing competition is open to anyone who is a non-professional writer or blogger.

The competition closes on the 3rd of July at 5pm EST. Entries should be submitted by email, in Word-document format, to editors@scientistafoundation.com

All entries must be written in English. We regret that entries in other languages will not be considered, and that we can only accept one entry per person.

Need some inspiration?
Entrants are free to choose any paper or topic, but we’ve got a bunch of leads for you to follow too! Get in touch with us at editors@scientistafoundation.com if you’d like some suggestions.

Be in to win!
The winners will be announced by the end of July.

The winning entry being published in our DiscovHER blog, and will also be considered for publication in the Huffington Post Scientista column. The winner will also receive Amazon vouchers (to the value of $50) and a Scientista t-shirt.

Up to five runners up will also have their articles published on our DiscovHER blog.

Of course, apart from this, the Scientista DiscovHER writing competition is a great way to make a splash in the science blogging world and start writing for Scientista! It’s also a great way to practice your science communication skills!

Some tips for successful writing
1. Check out some of our articles to get a feel for the Scientista writing style
2. Keep things simple!
3. Use metaphors and analogies to tell a good story
4. Feel free to include (appropriately cited) diagrams and photos to help illustrate your points

Here’s the fine print….
Only one entry per person. Your entries will be judged by a panel of Scientista editors. The judges’ decision is final and correspondence will not be entered into. When you submit an entry, you agree to allow us to edit your article for style and content, and publish it via the DiscovHER blog (under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License). Your entry will be checked for plagiarism. We regret that entry is not available to professional writers or bloggers (ie those who get paid to write!)

Help us out…
If you know someone who’s a nifty writer, share our competition details with them (all our social media links are below!) and encourage them to enter!
