TIME's 100 Most Influential People in the World 2013 Names 4 Scientistas

If you haven't yet heard of these four brilliant women in STEM, keep reading, for we're sure this won't be the last we'll hear of them! TIME magazine has named Kimberly Blackwell Hannah Gay, Katherine Luzuriaga and Deborah Persaud among the 100 most influential people of 2013, and we couldn't agree more. By curing AIDs and revolutionizing breast cancer treatment, these four women have earned themselves a place on this prestigious list. Learn about their breakthrough contributions below and prepare to be inspired!

Kimberly Blackwell, Oncologist

Kimberly Blackwell, Oncologist
SHAWN ROCCO / DUKE MEDICINE
WHO: Kimberly Blackwell is an oncologist (cancer doctor) at Duke University.
WHAT: She is finding new treatments for breast cancer. 
HOW: Her method focuses on creating antibodies that target the HER2 protein on aggressive forms of breast cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells alone. This results in a more effective drug with fewer side effects. 


Hannah Gay, Pediatrician

Scientista Hannah Gay
WHO: Hannah Gay is a pediatrician at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
WHAT: She* cured a baby of HIV/Aids!
HOW: By giving anti-HIV drugs to a baby who contracted it from it's mother hours after birth. This breakthrough in HIV treatment shows promise even for adults. 

*Hannah Gay, Katherine Luzuriaga and Deborah Persaud worked together on this and were all recognized in TIME's top 100.

Katherine Luzuriaga, Pediatric Immunologist

Scientista Katherine Luzuriaga
WHO: Katherine Luzuriaga, MD is a professor of pediatric immunology at University of Massachusetts Medical School.
WHAT: She* cured a baby of HIV/Aids!

WHO: Deborah Persaud, MD, is an associate professor in infectious disease at Johns Hopkins University.
