10/17/2016 6 Comments What to wear to lab: Fall edition
By Rita Algorri
During my time as an “official laboratory safety enforcer,” (aka lowly lab tech in charge of wrangling undergrads and throwing improperly dressed folks out of lab), spring and summer notoriously brought tons of dress code related drama into our laboratories. Crop tops, flip-flops, short skirts, destroyed denim, shorts, and arguments that began with an assertive, “I swear these are actually shoes,” were all too commonplace. Wearing nitrile gloves or plastic grocery bags on your feet (true story) is unflattering, dangerous, and attracts the unwanted attention of the health and safety inspector who is side-eyeing your lack of shoe wearing from 300 feet away. 9/28/2016 0 Comments Healthy snacking tips
By Dr. Lidiya Angelova-Duleva
We all like to have snacks between the meals and when we watch TV, the problem is that most of the snacks are full of calories, and often too processed. Fortunately there are plenty alternatives. They are healthy, easy to pack and eat on a go, and need little or no extra time to prepare.

So how is being a ‘parent’ grad student so different from being a ‘normal’ graduate student? I’m glad you asked, because honestly, some days it’s a struggle to stay focused. From a university perspective, the pressures on a parent grad student are the same as for a ’normal’ grad student. But that’s about where the similarities end. For starters, there is less time. I mean, so much less time for everything. Weekend sports? Family gatherings? Random road trips? No, no, and no. Not anymore. Being a grad student is a full time job on any level. Being a grad student not on a scholarship is hard. Working to get the bills paid, trying to keep your head above water and off the street whilst trying to finish a PhD is almost impossible. But what if you had some kids thrown into the mix? What if somehow you had to manage all of the above at once, on your own? Could you cope? Can I cope? I’m not sure if my vagueness on some days can be called “coping” but I’m trying. I’m there, I show up. Well, mostly.
Currently, women’s education in Western countries is at an all-time high, with women in both the UK and the US becoming more likely than ever to attend college or university compared to men. In the UK, women are 35% more likely than men to go to university with the gap growing year on year. At this rate, it is estimated that a girl born in 2016 will be 75% more likely to go to university than a boy. In the US, 2014 was the first year that saw women as more likely than men to have a bachelor’s degree. The percentage of men who held a bachelor’s degree or higher was 29.9% whilst for women it was at 30.2%.

We’ve all felt the regret and pain of wearing high heels for a fun night out or for a full work day. The blisters and soreness have us throwing off the shoes at the earliest convenience and soaking our feet in an ice bath sent from the gods. More serious than the pain, according to the study conducted by University of Alabama at Birmingham, between 2002 to 2012 there were 123,355 emergency room visits solely due to high heel related injuries. Clearly our high heel addiction can lead to serious consequences. Dolly Singh, founder and CEO of Thesis Couture, is hoping to take out the hurt of high heels and really change the high heel game.

*This article might also be applicable for med school interviews but warning: I’ve never had those, so be advised. It’s the moment you’ve been low key excited and high key stressed about: grad school interview. Interviews give you a chance to show the interviewer how grateful they’d be to have you in their program. You want to walk in with half the confidence of Kanye, which is more than enough for your interview. To begin the slaying that will be your interview, it starts with what you decide to wear to your interview. 5/4/2016 0 Comments What Do They Eat In Space?
By Labeley.com
Humans are the only living beings (except for Kanzi, the chimp-who can flip burgers) known to cook their food. Though we may live far away from our family for various reasons, the thoughts of Grandma’s cookies and Mom’s fluffy pancakes will make you feel like running home. In such cases, at least we try to get the recipes and make them. While food is only a requirement for the survival of all living beings, it is also an emotional notion for humans. Have you ever imagined how the astronauts in space deal under these circumstances? In the article on “Evolution of Food in Space: From Bland Puree to Almost Like on Earth”, the team from Labeley.com have created an insightful infographic about the food in space. |
