For new high school and college graduates, landing a great job is the ultimate goal, but it’s no easy feat. Most of us spend countless hours looking for the right jobs to apply to, creating the perfect resume, preparing for interviews, and studying up on companies - only to hit a wall. The process can be brutal, especially if it’s an industry with a lot of competition and not many openings. If you’re in the STEAM field, it’s critical that you’re well-prepared before you even begin the job search process. First, you’ll need to know where to begin looking and how to get started with your preparations.
Create a resume that will blow them away The right resume can help you stand out in a big way, and that’s crucial in a competitive field. Whether you’re applying for an internship or your first post-school job, you want to have a memorable resume -- one that makes you stand out. Try using an online resume building that provides templates so you can create the perfect showcase for your skills. Tools like resume or cover letter builders can help you through the entire process, removing some of the stress and anxiety that often accompany the job search. Learn how to network Networking is the cornerstone of success when it comes to finding your dream job. The best way to start is by spending quality time with your professors, building a mentorship with them that will allow you to learn as much as possible about the field you’re interested in. Making an effort to meet new people at school events and conventions will also help you create an invaluable network of peers. You can also consider joining a college club or organization that focuses on your specific field, or volunteering your time within your community. Go to job fairs You can’t go wrong with attending job fairs, which pop up often for students both on-campus and off. You never know who you might meet, or what sort of opportunities you can find. Just be sure to dress professionally and bring something to take notes with in case you meet someone who can help you. You might also practice beforehand with a parent or family member who can assist with asking questions. Try an internship “Increasingly students are using gap year, not only to travel but to work and do National Service, to do internships, to do other types of work while you try to figure out what you want to do,” says education expert Jeff Selingo. Internships can be hugely beneficial for recent grads, as they help you get hands-on experience in your chosen field. Plus, many internships these days are paid, so you won’t have to worry about fitting in a second job. Landing your dream job doesn’t have to be a stressful undertaking. With a good plan and a little prep work, you can create a superb resume and start building the skills you’ll need for the STEAM career of your dreams.
