8/14/2013 0 Comments Meet Shirley Ann Jackson, Physicist and President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson recieved her bachelor's degree in theoretical physics from MIT in 1968, and went on to complete her Ph.D. from the same insitutition in 1973. She worked on elemental particle theory for her postdoctoral work, and then conducted research in various prestigious laboratories in both the US and Europe, including the CERN, studying subatomic particles and hadrons. In 1995, President Clinton appointed her to serve as Chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In 1999, Jackson became the 18th President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Insititute, and became the first woman and first Afican American to take this position.
