By Niharika Vattikonda
Once the temperatures reach the single digits, and sometimes even the teens, frostbite can begin to occur. Frostbite occurs when the body constricts blood vessels near the skin’s surface to keep internal organs warmer. While blood vessels switch between constricting and widening to keep extremities warm, after the temperature is too cold, the blood vessels near the skin’s surface stop widening. At this temperature, ice crystals can form in the skin tissue and cause cell damage that cannot be repaired without increased blood flow. Although the times for it to occur depend on the wind chill, which is based on the speed of the wind and the temperature. In sub-zero temperatures, as seen below, frostbite can occur due to cell death within even half an hour of exposure, while wet weather reduces the time needed for frostbite yet still occurs drastically.

The bold red lipstick that people all over admire dates back to ancient times – in Ancient Egypt, dye extracted from carmine beetles and ants became a cosmetic staple, with only the poorest classes not being able to procure the cosmetics. Cleopatra, for example, was often sighted and depicted with red-colored lips. Although the production and commercialization of lipstick have changed dramatically since then, one thing remains true: lipstick is a quintessential product, worn by over 80 percent of American women. Women use over 9 pounds of lipstick in their lifetimes, but over 30% of that is ingested, with greater amounts for flavored products. 12/2/2015 0 Comments CSTERHOOD, UNITE!

Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology (TJHSST), Virginia has seen a wave of encouraging girls to be involved in computer science for the past few years. Coding Lady Colonials, sponsored by Computer Science teacher Ria Galanos, provides a friendly yet encouraging atmosphere to motivate girls (and boys!) in learning various aspects of coding. Although students are required to take Foundations of Computer Science, an introductory course in Java, continued retention of students, particularly girls, is challenging. The increased exposure is not enough to increase the number of girls in upper-level computer science classes, including mobile and web app development, parallel computing, and artificial intelligence. 10/21/2015 0 Comments Sorting Out Your Health Insurance

Health insurance: we buy it, but we always hope that we never have to use it. Not having health insurance can lead to a variety of complications, both medical and financial. Since the Affordable Care Act began mandating health insurance for most Americans who can afford it, people who do not buy health insurance will have to pay a penalty of $95 (or 1% of annual income – whichever is greater). Furthermore, without health insurance, annual check-ups are not covered and as a result, certain conditions may go undetected.

People first started bejewelling their ears 5,000 years ago to symbolize wealth and to prevent demons from entering the brain. Piercings then went dormant until the 1500s, when hairstyles that exposed the ears became popular. The trend, particularly piercing the nose and septum, was revived during the 70s, based on Indian culture. Now, a major trend is tiny and chic rings in piercings - from tiny hoops on the upper ear to chains on the ear lobe. |
