Julia Speaks at Harvard Women's Leadership Conference!

Today I had the pleasure of speaking on the "Women in Science" Panel at the 25th Harvard-Radcliffe Women's Leadership Conference at the Harvard Kennedy School.  I was honored and humbled to speak along-side the extremely impressive scientistas, Dr. Nancy Oriol and Dr. Sujata Bhatia (Scientista's dear advisor!). During the panel, the room of 30 or so women had a chance to go around and ask questions about being a female and a leader in science.  Their insightful and diverse inquiries inspired fruitful conversations, ranging from balancing a science/family life to overcoming the unique challenges of being a woman in STEM.

The panel was part of a week-long conference that aimed to empower, inspire, and cultivate Harvard's female leaders. I want to thank Benjana Guraziu and the rest of the Women's Leadership Conference team for such an inspiring afternoon. We commend the WLC's work to empower female leaders!

XX,
Julia

Westchester Medical Society Dinner

Yesterday, Christina and I attended the Annual Westchester Medical Society dinner in Harrison, New York. The dinner brought together hundreds of physicians and friends of physicians from across the county. Among the attendees were prominent physicians and past presidents and leaders of the Medical Society, and "friends of physicians," including defense lawyers, drug reps, medical device companies, and Congresswoman Nan Hayworth (see picture below!), who is a former physician and Scientista herself!

We also had the pleasure of meeting some of this year's high school Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF) winners! All of the high school students presented their poster board sessions and were awarded a certificate and scholarship prize by the Medical Society during the dinner. Christina and I had the pleasure of meeting two brilliant and impressive Scientettes, Maria Mavrommatis and Colson Campbell, of Yorktown High School, who presented their impressive research on "The Relationship between Pregnancy/Postpartum and Subarachnoid Hemmorrhaging." They were awarded along with their equally impressive future male doctor peers, Jurgen Bushi from Yorktown High School and Mark Alexander of Mamaroneck High School.

Girls in STEM video from the White House!

We applaud the White House for bringing national attention to the accomplishments of girls in STEM! One great step toward working for a more gender-equal science environment in the US.

First Presidents' Circle of Boston Event!

This Saturday, the Presidents' Circle of Boston gathered for our very first mixer: ScienTEAsta, at MIT! The leaders of our campus affiliate organizations (including Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, MIT, and Tufts) had the opportunity to meet with each other, share stories about their organizations, and discuss future intercollegiate collaborations. The PC members also had a chance to meet with Karen Yee, treasurer of the Boston AWIS Chapters, which is one of Scientista's partner organizations.

It was a lovely event! Looking forward to more Presidents' Circle gatherings! For more pictures, check out our facebook album:

Cool Opportunity - The Experiment Fund

Picture
Hi Scientistas!

Here's a quick blast about an opportunity that you won't want to miss out on!--
Last Friday, we had the opportunity to attend the launch event of the Experiment Fund, Harvard University's first-ever VC for student entrepreneurs. The Experiment Fund, or X-Fund, (see above for their cleverly designed logo) was co-founded by one of the Scientista Foundation's amazing advisors, Hugo  Van Vuuren, who is all about empowering women in STEM.

Straight from their website,   "The Experiment Fund — an agile seed investor — is a bridge between America's oldest universities and storied venture capital firms. Whether through the scientific method, artistic discovery, or lean optimization, we help tomorrow's technology leaders build and realize their visions today.  We support these founders with seed capital, consistent guidance, and unparalleled access to experts." The X-Fund is unique in that it makes *seed investments* in student ideas! And pretty large investments at that. Sources say that the X-Fund will invest up to $250,000 per venture.

So who are they looking to invest in? "Bold engineers, entrepreneurs and designers"... In short, YOU! Though based in Cambridge, anyone is welcome to apply, regardless of university, age, or experience. Particularly if you have a focus on Information, Healthcare, and Energy Technologies.

We know that our Scientistas are some of the best innovators out there, and we want you to get a piece of this pie! Have a brilliant idea but don't have teammates? We started a special discussion board to connect you with other scientistas right on our website: WISE Ideas forum. So get your thinking caps on and start innovating!

For more information about the Experiment Fund, visit their website: http://experimentfund.com/

XX,
J&C
