Scientista Launches Inaugural Scientista Symposium!

Scientista Symposium for Women in STEM
By Julia Tartaglia, Co-Founder, The Scientista Foundation

This spring, the Scientista Foundation, a national organization and campus network dedicated to empowering pre-professional women in STEM, is launching its inaugural Scientista Intercollegiate Research Symposium, a one-day conference and poster symposium for campus women in STEM. The conference, centered on the theme “Scientistas speak up: communication in STEM,” will allow students to listen to inspirational talks, network with peers and professionals, and present their own research during a poster symposium.

The Scientista Symposium line-up of amazing speakers, includes the dynamic Elise Andrew, who shot to fame after creating the 10 million fanned Facebook page franchise, I F#!cking Love Science. Elise, a wildly successful science communicator, received a negative backlash from some of her fans when it was revealed a woman was moderating the page. Her talk will explore the importance of social media to communicate science to the public. The Symposium will also feature a talk by the charasmatic Deborah Berebichez, physicist and co-host of the Discovery Channel’s “Outrageous Acts of Science.”

Additional panels will explore a range of topics, including careers in STEM, featuring prominent women from across STEM industries from academia to industry, a graduate school 101 panel with admissions officers and graduate students, and a workshop on how to communicate assertively!

What makes the Symposium truly a unique experience is its poster symposium exclusively for college women in STEM fields. The poster symposium will allow women to gain first-hand experience practicing their communication skills on a national platform. For an aspiring scientist, presenting one’s own findings to the larger scientific community is an important skill to cultivate for professional development. A select number of female students from across the country will be chosen based on their abstracts to present their posters on the day of the Symposium.

So what are you waiting for? Ready to get empowered? Register today! ALL are welcome to attend.

There is also still time to submit an abstract if you'd like to present at the Symposium.

Scientista Team Outing to Gravity!

Picture

Last night, our exec team went on an outing to see Gravity, a new movie about a space mission gone awry. This thriller featured a female protagonist, a physician-astronaut (played by Sandra Bullock). Though perhaps not the greatest promotional video for NASA, we loved the female empowerment! Have you gone to see Gravity yet? What did you think? Leave a comment!

XX,

Julia
