- Scientista Foundation is a national organization that creates content, communities, and conferences for pre-professional women in STEM. Since its founding in 2011 (by two sisters named Julia and Christina Tartaglia), Scientista has grown into a network of 20+ student organizations at universities across the country. The organization's activities also include hosting career fairs and an annual symposium, where undergrad women can present their original research.
We're in the process revamping the blog sections of our website (“Advice Center” and “Get Inspired” tabs at ScientistaFoundation.com) and are recruiting contributors and editors for the summer.
Both the editor and contributor roles are part-time positions intended for students or early career science writers, who are either in school, interning, or working full time, and would like to gain editorial and writing experience by working with an international team of fellow science writers.
Because Scientista is a start-up non-profit, the editor and contributor positions are unpaid. However, we intend to leverage our connections to outlets like IFLS, Huffington Post, and organizations like NASW and NESW, so that if Scientista staff and contributors are interested in pursuing science writing professionally, they have a possibility of being connected to professional outlets and mentors through us.
Because they are volunteers, contributors are free to choose how frequently they want to write pieces for the blogs. The time commitment can be as intensive or as light as the contributor's schedule permits.
Section editors' responsibilities will include:- offering feedback on 2-3 blog pieces per week
- attending weekly virtual staff meetings on Google hangout,

- contributing articles for their section,
- keeping the editor-in-chief and managing editor up-to-date on articles' status.
- (It's roughly a 5-7 hour per week time commitment, depending on how quickly you edit)
And since we're going to be consolidating some of our blogs, successful candidates will have some input into what types of articles are included in their section.
Basic Qualifications: (for all members of the Scientista blog team)- Strong interest in science (preference given to candidates who are studying or who hold degrees in STEM fields)
- Interest in feminism and women's issues
- Must be able work on writing projects independently while coordinating with team via email and Google Hangout
- Passion for writing!
For section editors:- Background in writing and/or editing journalistic non-fiction (2-3 years required for section editors. Writing and/or editing for school newspapers, internships with editorial or writing components, tutoring work, etc. count. For contributors, requirements are softer, but writing & editing experience are a definite plus)
- A knack for being friendly while offering constructive criticism
- Preference given to candidates who either have degrees in STEM fields or are nearing completion of their bachelors
- Experience working with NGOs/non-profits (a plus)
