Welcome back and we hope all of you had a wonderful summer! As the fall semester begins, we can't wait to get started on recruiting newbie-Scientistas in the Class of 2017/anyone else who may be interested in STEM! 2/6/2013 0 Comments Our Team!Amanda Brodsky (Campus Founder and Co-Director) Class of 2015 Psychology Major, Education Minor Amanda Brodsky is a sophomore at Barnard College, majoring in Psychology and with a minor in Education. Since taking a seminar with a focus on the topic, Amanda has been serious about supporting women in STEM. An important member of the CU Earth Coalition, she also has a special interest in the environment. Amanda is from Darien, Connecticut. Amanda loves everything that is raspberry flavored and has a siamese snack collection! Her favorite things to do in her free time are explore Manhattan, play tennis, and tutor young students. Angelica Leon (Co-Director) Class of 2015 Psychology Major, Statistics Minor Angelica Leon is a sophomore at Barnard, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Statistics. As a transfer from Cornell, Scientista has allowed Angelica find a community of intelligent women who share the same strong interest in STEM; she hopes to inspire and be inspired by those involved with the chapter and the larger foundation. Angelica is aspires to work in the health field and is involved with the Barnard-Columbia Chorus, Pre-Health Student Organization and is a blog contributor to Columbia's Fashion Magazine, Hoot. This summer, she looks forward to spending her summer as a volunteer in the pediatric oncology department at Memorial Sloan Kettering. As native New Yorker, when she's not wondering the Highline, you can find her dreaming about the beach and drinking iced caramel macchiatos. Rebecca Giglio (Department Affairs Chair) Class of 2015 Psychology Major, Spanish/Biology Minor Rebecca Giglio is originally from suburban New York, now studying in it’s bustling city at Barnard College as a sophomore. She is a psychology major with a spanish and biology minor. Aside from contributing to the goals of Scientista as a board member of Barnard’s chapter, Rebecca is also a research assistant in Barnard’s speech perception lab and a teaching assistant for the cognitive psychology lab course. When she is not engrossed in her science studies, she is speaking rudimentary spanish, working on random graphic art projects, or discovering viral youtube videos on her Facebook newsfeed. She is very much looking forward to the upcoming Scientista events and the opportunity to work with so many inspiring women! Naomi Polinsky (Treasurer) Class of 2015 Psychology Major Naomi Polinsky is a sophomore at Barnard College majoring in psychology. She became passionate about science when she took biology during her first year of college. She was particularly eager to be involved as the treasurer of Scientista because of the focus on women. Naomi is involved with Strive, a mentoring program for children in New York City with sickle cell anemia, and the Columbia University Dance Team. She is from East Brunswick, New Jersey. Her interests include bagels and mint chocolate chip ice cream. Maya Feldman (Public Relations Chair) Class of 2016 Undecided Maya Feldman is a first year at Barnard College, and although her major is undeclared and undecided, she is leaning towards studying Biology. She is from Newton, MA, a suburb just outside of Boston. Maya has been interested in the sciences, especially Biology, ever since she was in elementary school. Scientista has given Maya the opportunity to be surrounded by women who are just as passionate about STEM as she is. Aside from Scientista, Maya is involved in several different campus organizations, including a dance group, Orchesis, the Social Cultural Committee of Hillel, the Jewish Community on campus, and Sigma Delta Tau sorority, among others. When she is not busy working on her famous Biology flashcards, Maya can be found in the gym or pool, wandering around New York, orwatching TV. Rachel Furst (Managing Editor and Publisher) Class of 2015 Architecture Major Rachel Furst was born and raised in Miami Beach, FL and is a proud member of the class of 2015 at Barnard College. She is an architecture major. Rachel has hada love for the sciences since grade school, and particularly enjoys chemistry. She is involved in many groups on campus including, Hillel, the Jewish community on campus, Hoot, the on-campus fashion magazine, and Scientista. When off campus, Rachel likes to explore the city; she loves discovering offbeat cafes and wandering through SoHo and Williamsburg. Rachel also enjoys writing for different publications and has taken the role of managing editor and publisher for the Barnard chapter of Scientista. Dana Gorovici (Events Co-Chair) Class of 2015 Biology Major, Math Minor Dana Gorovici is a sophomore pre-med student at Barnard College, majoring in biology with a minor in math. Even with those hectic pre-med requirements she finds time to discover Manhattan and enjoys spending down time in Central Park with an ice cream in hand, regardless of season. Still undecided about her career path, Dana is interested in either pediatric care or marine biology, spending countless hours on the beach, her favorite setting. She spends her summers and breaks at her home in Israel, where she enjoys volunteering with children and practicing any type of water sport from extreme kiteboarding to scuba diving. She looks forward to expanding the Barnard Scientista chapter and planning events that will solidify the Scientista role on campus! Rachel Belfer (Events Co-Chair) Class of 2015 History Major, Pre-Med Rachel Belfer was born and raised in New York City and is a proud member of the class of 2015 at Barnard College. She cares about the humanities and science and for that reason she is a Pre-Med History major. Particularly, Rachel likes studying about the interplay between science and culture. Rachel is a member of Artists Reaching Out, a program that instructs art classes in local public schools, serves as one of the presidents of The Hillel Kraft Clothing Pantry, and is now excited to step into the position of co-chair of events for Scientista!
